Director’s Statement

TIME ROJAK is inspired by the challenging dynamics of mixing spirituality and pragmatism, and by the interaction between tradition and innovation. The movie explores the complexities of clashing visions navigating through time.

Rojak is a Malay and Singlish term for mixture, and its colloquial usage has both light and dark connotations in the local Singaporean popular culture. It is said that rojak “brings together disparate items with strong flavors into a harmoniously tasty blend.” It is also said that rojak is an “untidy mixture of things.”

Mixing can be an effective way to create new and sometimes improved things but the process of mixing can be messy, and sometimes chaotic.
